Brad started his public speaking career as a Kearns High School speech and debate competitor. He was on two region and state championship winning teams. Over the course of two years Brad won over thirty trophies in six different events. A few of his individual highlights include: five time national qualifying speaker and debater in Lincoln Douglas debate and persuasive speaking, first place at the 1995 Stanford National Invitational open persuasive speaking event, first place persuasive speaking at the 1995 College of Eastern Utah Invitational, first place Lincoln Douglas debate at the 1995 Utah’s Governor’s Cup, and first place Lincoln Douglas debate at the 1996 San Francisco State University championship division. Entering the 1996-97 season, as a Lincoln Douglas debater, Brad was ranked ‘top ten’ in the nation.

After graduating high school, Brad stepped onto a stand-up comedy stage to test his humor in front of less forgiving audiences. After seven years of writing and performing his original material, Brad was headlining comedy clubs and nightclubs. He performed in over one hundred cities in twenty-six different states. He was featured multiple times on Fox Television and heard on the “Bob and Tom” nationally syndicated morning radio show. He opened for several celebrities including: Bobcat Goldthwait, Dave Atell, and Lewis Black. Also notable, he performed stand-up at the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic games, won the 2004 Seattle qualifier for the Las Vegas Comedy Festival, and played Johnny Nunzio in 105 performances of Salt Lake City’s version of “Tony N’ Tina’s Wedding.”

While pursuing an education, Brad received a Master’s of the Arts of Teaching from Westminster College and a Master’s in Communication from the University of Miami. Brad’s first role as an educator was returning to Kearns High School to coach speech and debate. Brad coached students who achieved local and national success. His former students have received scholarships from multiple colleges and universities. Despite moving on from this position Brad continues to consult Kearns High persuasive speakers.

Brad is currently a public speaking and communications educator at Bethel University. He accepted this position in 2018. Since then, he has developed and delivered multiple teaching trainings (rigor, engagement, class culture, and using humor as a teaching strategy), been nominated for the Roy and Mary Shelton Teaching Excellence award for three consecutive years, and has been featured in the Maribeth McGuire lecture series performing his one-man show “Two Million Steps Towards Clarity.” In the spring of 2021, Brad also played Dan Seymour in Bethel’s production of “Around the World in Eighty Days.”

Below is one of my video tutorials, and a brief clip from my “The Serious Business of Being Funny” lecture.

In a previous life he was considered a very competitive pool player. In his free time, he long distance hikes, take photos of flowers, and treasures every moment with loved ones!
